Advantages of Dental Implants

Dental Implants for Denture Stabilization

When you have missing teeth or teeth that are beyond repair, considering a dental implant can provide you with natural looking teeth that allow you to eat, talk and smile naturally and comfortably. A dental implant is composed of a titanium post, which acts like a tooth root, and a crown.

Experienced, competent Dental Implant treatment

Dr. Niemi has considerable experience with dental implants as well as completing extensive advanced training.

He will guide your treatment throughout, ensuring you get maximum opportunity for success. To this end, he has partnered with an excellent periodontist, Dr. Joseph Will, who performs the surgery needed to place the implant. Dr. Will's success rate for implant integration is extremely high, at or near 100%.

Who can benefit from Dental Implants?

With modern technology, practically everyone can have dental implants. Sometimes preliminary steps need to be taken, such as augmenting the jawbone where bone has been lost, or even lifting the sinus to make room for the implant. Exactly what needs to be done, and any alternatives, can be evaluated by Dr. Niemi.

Dental implants are for teeth already missing or teeth that need to be extracted. Dental implants can be used in combination with other prosthetics (false teeth), such as for stabilizing dentures or bridges (fixed dentures), making a full-mouth restoration more affordable.

What is a dental implant?

Dental Implants in Arvada, CO - Tom Niemi, DDS

A dental implant (right) compared to a natural tooth (left).

Composed of a biocompatible, man-made substance, this is the latest technology to replace missing or heavily damaged teeth. Using a titanium post placed into your jawbone to act as a replacement root, this acts as an anchor to then place a new porcelain crown over the implant. This allows for a stable, natural looking tooth that is strong and comfortable and allows you to chew normally.

Gone are embarrassing, missing gaps in your teeth, replaced with a natural looking tooth that will give you confidence in your smile and aid in continued dental health.

Dr. Niemi designs your new crown using CEREC 3-D software.

Dental Implants in Arvada, CO - Tom Niemi, DDS

Dr. Niemi partners with Dr. Joseph Will, who uses a Cone Beam 3-D system. The Cone Beam revolves around the head in order to capture a 360º view. Dr. Will uses the 3-D images generated to precisely plan the dental implant placement.

Starting with a comprehensive oral exam, Dr. Niemi evaluates what would need to be done to place implants for you. He will explain more about the implant procedure as well as review the different options you have for missing teeth.

Precise, minimally invasive treatment

Dr. Niemi’s dental implant partner uses 3-D x-rays (cone beam technology) to give further evaluation, and together he and Dr. Niemi work out an exact treatment plan for you.

Due to the precise nature of the 3-D imaging, the dental implant can be very exactly placed, requiring far less cutting than formerly.

Creating your new tooth

Once your titanium implant is firmly integrated, Dr. Niemi places a crown and a connecting “abutment.” He uses high quality porcelain that is very strong and durable and that also has a natural, translucent appearance.

With this careful planning, you can be assured of a dental implant that is very long-lasting and that is fully functional as well as aesthetic.

Advantages of Dental Implants

  • Dental implants fill unsightly gaps in a smile.

  • Dental implants deter the bone loss that will occur when a tooth is lost. The titanium post fuses with the bone, thus preventing it from dissolving.

  • Fixed bridges and removable dentures are not the perfect solution to missing teeth and often bring with them a number of other problems.

  • When teeth are lost, the bone which held the roots of the teeth starts to dissolve, and so removable dentures may slip or cause sores on the gums.

  • Fixed bridges and removable dentures usually need to be replaced every seven to 15 years, compared to an up to 25-year life span for dental implants.

  • When you lose teeth, you inevitably lose mass in your jaw. This affects the overall skeletal structure of your face, which not only changes your profile, but also may result in thin lips, drooping muscles, jowls or witch's chin.

  • Spreading bone loss in the jaw also affects the gums and ridges in your mouth, as well as the muscles and nerves in and around the mouth.

Dental Implants for Denture Stabilization

Dental Implants in Arvada, CO - Tom Niemi, DDS

This is a "fixed implant denture". The denture is anchored by the titanium implant posts, giving it great stability and chewing power.

Sometimes a patient already has dentures and doesn’t want to invest in full dental implants. By placing a couple of implants with snaps on the upper and lower arches of the mouth, dentures can be stabilized and prevent slippage and improve the ability to chew.

For an even more affordable alternative, Dr. Niemi can place Mini Implants, smaller dental implants that can be placed in one visit and are considerably lower in price.

With more dental implants, four to each arch, dentures can be made to be completely fixed and stable, only removable by the dentist. Dr. Niemi also provides aesthetic dentures that look just like natural teeth.
